Chapter Herstory

It all started with four mighty women…

Chartered on December 7th, 1923 at Columbia University, Rho Chapter is the seventeenth chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The chapter was chartered by Carlene Alexander, Mildred Randolph Foster (Barnard Student), the Harlem Renaissance artist Gwendolyn Bennett (Columbia Art Student), and Constance Willis. Rho Chapter was deactivated in 1961 and then rechartered in 1986 by twelve dynamic collegiate women at Columbia University.

The chapter has since continued its commitment to academic excellence and community involvement. For 100 years, the Rho Chapter has served the Columbia University community as well as the greater community of Harlem, NYC. Our commitment to dynamic excellence is evident in the distinguished accomplishments of prominent Rho Chapter Sorors, most notably Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, Civil Rights Activist and 10th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The chapter has received numerous accolades throughout the years for its academic achievements and selfless devotion to community involvement. With the legacy of past Rho Sorors as an inspiring example, the Mighty Rho Chapter continuously works to uphold the ideals of the illustrious Sorority.
